Is your care home safe? This is one of the CQC’s five key lines of enquiry and a key quality regulators look for during an inspection. There are several ways you can create a safe service, including having a proactive and positive culture of safety, safeguarding residents and staff and ensuring you have enough qualified and experienced staff.

There are also several audit forms available to help you assess your care, health and safety, maintenance and medication. These can be used to identify concerns and risks in the environment to make improvements as soon as possible.

To support the delivery of safe care and evidence your due diligence – when you perform maintenance and health and safety checks on various equipment and facilities – the information can be recorded in the system. You can keep track of maintenance details for mobility aids, lifts, PAT testing, electrical and gas servicing, vehicle servicing, fire safety, first aid supplies, medication storage, water temperatures and more.

Staff Training and Policies and Procedures will support your workforce by keeping them up to date with their training and best practice. Good communication and access to essential information can help people to easier understand how to keep safe and the best way to achieve this.

The Supervisions tool enables you to record issues raised by staff to showcase that you have an open and honest working culture. Issues which regulators look for may include bullying, harassment, abuse, neglect, avoidable harm and discrimination. Additionally, there are digital forms any staff member can use record feedback from residents and visitors.

To demonstrate safety is taken seriously, be sure that your staff bring concerns to you, and keep track of the actions you are taking. This will show people are listened to and events are investigated and reported thoroughly. Having written examples of positive change at your care business will demonstrate lessons are learned to continually identify and embed good practices.
